A Brief History of Crown Molding

Learn about the history of crown molding!

Many people love the sophistication and overall finished look that crown molding adds to a space. It’s often used to enhance the design of a room, especially on ceilings, over doorways, the base of door frames, and around windows. As often as it is seen in homes, apartments, and even in hotels, you probably haven’t taken the time to think about the history of this classic design element. Here’s a brief history of how crown molding has been used over the decades up until now.

Past

To look at the history of crown molding, you have to consider the different phases of interior design.  It has been in use as far back as the 16th century as a way to express the status of noble and wealthy people. It ranged from ornate, handcrafted creations to simpler, more streamlined details. It was used heavily  in dining spaces, dance halls, and other banquet or celebration rooms. The different types and styles include round, apron, stool, capitals and pedestals, and columns or balusters. Throughout the centuries, the popularity of crown molding has fluctuated, coming in and out of style as the look of the day called for minimalism, extravagance, sharp lines, or more frill.

Present

In recent years, crown molding has regained popularity and many designers or individual homeowners use the design accessory. Aside from open concepts, modern designs don’t typically follow a certain set of rules when it comes to designing and accentuating spaces. Therefore, many people who enjoy the enhancement that crown molding adds to a space have the opportunity and freedom to implement crown molding as they please, throughout their home. But crown molding isn’t just aesthetically pleasing; it can also be functional in supporting your home. Homes that were built between the 1930s and 1970s have older materials used in the wall and ceilings. Adding crown molding helps support those elements by reinforcing the structure of those areas in the way that is stylish and not distracting.  Choose shapes and details that complement the existing architecture of your home and other design elements in the space, like your furniture fixtures.
