The Environmental Benefits of Building with Wood

Wood is amazing when it comes to environmental friendliness.

Many of us are already aware of some of the many benefits of using wood. It is used to make strong, efficient, and durable houses. Wood is an attractive and comfortable material from which we make beautiful furniture and flooring. Wood is also very versatile and abundant, used in thousands of products necessary to daily life. So, for building houses, it makes sense that building with wood, a renewable, natural resource, would have enormous environmental benefits compared with steel or concrete.

Go Green!

Natural wood uses less energy and produces less air and water pollution than any other major manufactured building materials. Wood is a material that can be used instantly and only needs a few preparatory treatments.  The natural material manufactured in the forest and only needs to be shaped and sawed into the correct sizes. With construction and design, these wood products can come together to create a sustainable home or commercial building. Wood has the power to reduce CO2 emissions. This is because the production of solid wood products results in the storage of a portion of the trees’ carbon in another long-term storage medium. Also, with continuous technological advancements, engineered wood systems can maximize the use of the material to reduce the use of resources, not to mention the increasing availability of recycled wood and it’s obvious tree-saving benefits.

Energy Efficient

Wood has a higher insulation rating than either steel or plastic because of its natural cellular structure. This means that homes and buildings require less energy to maintain heating and cooling! Wood can also help regulate humidity levels to a small degree. Wood is the most biodegradable material available. One of the biggest challenges of many building materials, including concrete, metal, and plastics, is that when they are discarded, they take an impossibly long time to decompose. When exposed to natural climate conditions, wood will break down much more quickly and replenish the soil in the process.
