Governor Moore appoints Mahogany, Inc.’s founder Jeff Hargrave to Maryland’s new thoroughbred racetrack operating authority.

On June 2023, Governor Wes Moore announced appointments to Maryland’s new Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority. In particular, one of them is Mahogany Inc.’s founder, Jeff Hargrave. The authority, formed through Senate Bill 720 passed earlier in the year, will make recommendations regarding the state’s racing industry. It will also work to enhance horse racing and training facilities in Maryland.

The Importance of Maryland’s Racing Industry

According to Governor Moore, the horse racing industry is critical to Maryland’s history and our current economy. He also mentions that Maryland has a long unique tradition of racing. In the article, Governor Moore states that his administration is devoted to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure a successful and sustainable future for Maryland racing.

Separate from the Maryland Racing Commission, the authority will convene experts to study problems and make recommendations regarding the future of racing, including investing in Maryland’s racing facilities. This will ensure that the state remains a go-to racing destination for many years to come. 

More About Jeff Hargrave (Authority Member)

Jeff Hargrave is the founder/president of Mahogany, Inc., a commercial construction firm specializing in general contracting, commissioning services, and architectural millwork since 1991. A native of Baltimore City, Hargrave graduated from Mergenthaler Vocational Technical School. He also studied business management at Catonsville Community College and the University of Phoenix. Fortunately, his professional career moved forward gradually from carpenter to now the proud owner and CEO of Mahogany, Inc.

Moreover, Jeff Hargrave won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneurs of the Year award in 2018 in the service category for the mid-Atlantic region. Most importantly, he is currently a philanthropist who supports the community. In addition, he is a member of many boards, including the Greater Baltimore Committee and Maryland Chamber of Commerce, and is Vice Chair of the Baltimore Development Corporation.

The authority includes:

  • A representative from the Maryland Stadium Authority
  • A representative from the Maryland Economic Development Corporation
  • A member appointed by the Senate President
  • Also, a member appointed by the Speaker of the House
  • And a member of the Maryland Racing Commission
