Maybe you haven’t thought about this before, but your door is the most used part of your home. You open and close your doors several times throughout the day. It makes sense that doors have wear and tear especially over some years of usage.  While a door may seem to serve a simple purpose, many components make a door to work. There may be a few loose screws, or you may need to replace the door completely. Of course, choosing a stylish door made of the right wood is essential. Still, knowing how to preserve and fix your investment matters as well. Keep reading to not only discover common door issues but how to fix that specific issue as well.

Hinge Problems

If your door is squeaking or rattling, then there is most likely an issue with its hinges. Other warning signs are the door not getting stuck and not opening and closing correctly. A simple solution is to rub the door down with WD-40, soap, or oil. If this doesn’t work, door replacement is the suggestion.

Door rattling can cause an annoying sound that can disrupt a home. If your door is rattling while its shut then this stems from loose hinges that you can tighten.

Your Door Won’t Latch

A door not latching is unsafe and dangerous. The purpose of having a door is for its ability to close. If you can’t get the latch to lock, then you could have problems shutting it. A door not latching comes from misalignment from the strike plate. Fixing this problem is easy. Just unscrew the latch and realign it to the door jamb. Then, screw the strike plate into that spot. If this doesn’t solve the problem, then consider replacing your door hardware.

Cold Air or A Draft Gets In

Unnecessary, cold air seeping in through your door costs money and is an inconvenience. You’ll have to use your furnace or other heating methods more to heat your home which can result in high energy bills. Try weatherstripping your home.

Misalignment between the door and its frame can also cause drafts. Draftiness comes from hinge or latch problems as well along with moisture and warping. Weatherstripping solves these problems, but if not, replacement is the answer.

Does Your Door Stick?

If so, then this could be due to debris covering your door. Clean out the hinges. If your jamb is sticking, then you screw a long screw into the latch and the frame. A bigger issue could be the foundation of your home. If this is the case, then reach out to a professional right away.
